Seybold News: Imation Expands Rainbow Proofer Line With New Large Format Proofer

San Francisco, Calif. ( September 11, 1996) -- Imation Corp. (NYSE: IMN), the new imaging and information company recently spun-off from 3M, today unveiled the Rainbow™ Model 4700 proofing system, a new four-page (A2-size) ink jet digital proofing solution that delivers proven Rainbow color technology to users requiring large format, contract quality proofs.

Imation's new Rainbow proofer is designed to meet the needs of customers who require a format size large enough to accommodate oversized pages, four-page imposed layouts, posters, package designs and efficient scatter proofing of multiple images.

The 21-inch x 28-inch image allows for four full 8.5 x 11-inch pages plus bleed and enough room to include a color control scale and job information on the proof.

"We have combined 30 years of leadership in color science with Imation's success in digital color proofing systems to create a large format proofing system that can deliver proofs that match commercial and publication printing and provide a precise match to the industry-leading Matchprint® proofing system," said Sarah Meek, digital product marketing manager, Imation Printing and Publishing Systems.

The Rainbow 4700 proofing system will have a list price of less than $80,000 and is expected to be available during the first quarter of 1997.

Through the use of Imation's new commercial, publication and design inkjet receptors for the Rainbow 4700 and precision color targets, users will be able to create proofs that provide a new level of accuracy in matching their press conditions and Imation 3M Matchprint proofs.

Taking advantage of the Rainbow Adobe Postscript level 2 software RIP, the Rainbow 4700 controller software gives users expanded productivity, color capability and improved workflow features. More than 7,000 users worldwide currently use this leading edge technology to reduce proofing costs and maximize productivity.

The Rainbow 4700 enhances this proofing environment by providing users with the ability to preview RIPped pages on-screen before they are proofed. Through the use of an Adobe Photoshop plug-in, users can open the Rainbow Page Image file, view it on-screen and verify its contents before sending it to the proofer. The proofer incorporates the Realist continuous-flow ink jet print engine, developed by Scitex Corporation Ltd.

The Rainbow 4700 can accept files in ANSI IT8.8, TIFF/IT, CMYK and RGB, TIFF, PostScript, Photoshop, EPS, and Scitex CT file formats. The system is expected to have additional modules to provide seamless access compatibility to high-end file formats such as Scitex and Hell formats.

Imation's new proofer incorporates a wide range of value-added controller software features, including:

RIP-on-the-Fly -- Gives users the ability to spool, RIP and print simultaneously, maximizing productivity and providing significant time savings.

Saves RIPped and Spooled files -- Saves the processed page file for future proofing and compresses the file for easy storage and quick transmission.

Supports up to eight color separations -- Saves time; no need to convert spot colors into process colors before sending them to the Rainbow proofer.

PANTONE® Certified -- Full Pantone library eliminates the need to process separate Pantone colors.

Color Target Selection -- Provides users with the ability to select different targets to simulate various printing conditions, including commercial, sheet-fed publication newspaper Euro color, and Japan color. Includes Matchprint color targets for close approximation of Matchprint proofs.

Imation's complete digital proofing family includes the Professional Series: Rainbow Models 2730 and the soon-to-be-available 2740; and the Imation Pre-Proofer Model 2715. The Rainbow color proofing system is a 1995 winner of the GATF InterTech Technology Award, which recognizes technologies expected to have a major impact on the graphic communication industries. The Rainbow system also was awarded the Macworld World Class Award, given to the top products of 1995, "that deserve to be viewed as superior -- not just in comparison to their competition, but on an absolute standard of quality, value, and performance."

In addition to its family of digital proofers, Imation provides data distribution solutions and connectivity features to enable both efficient remote proofing and color fidelity, regardless of the source or destination of the color image. Imation also markets its proprietary Color Locking Software, a color calibration system that provides a numerical method to ensure that Rainbow proofs provide consistent color, proof-to-proof and machine-to-machine.

On August 28, Imation announced that it reached agreement to acquire Luminous Corporation of Seattle, Wash., a leading developer and marketer of desktop software to the prepress, print production, printing and graphic arts industries.

The acquisition will provide Imation with the added strength of Luminous' portfolio of market-leading desktop prepress software products and future technology platforms.
